South of France

I TRAVELED to Provence with two fellow architects and, not surprisingly, we were in constant awe of the urban and architectural setting of their towns and cities. Their local stone and complex urban layout within topographical constraints, really shed light on their rich traditions of placemaking. Avignon, an old papal city, served as our base from which we traveled to gems such as Uzès and Aix en Provence. Walkability was a recurring theme in every town; all the more reason to enjoy the spectacular cuisine we encountered!

Avignon showed how the workings of a traditional city can be beautifully integrated with a fortified papal palace.

The charm of vernacular materials is one to be admired and enjoyed by all.
